“One day some parents brought their little children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But when the disciples saw this, they scolded the parents for bothering him. Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them…” (Luke 18: 15 -16 (NLT))
Thank God for all the parents who placed their kids before Jesus long ago to receive his touch and blessings, and thank God for those of you who still do! People often speak of the scripture in Luke 18:15 in relation to the disciples’ reproach, but rarely in relation to the parenting of the parents or guardians on the receiving end of it.
The parents were doing a good thing taking their kids to Jesus. They had heard and been transformed by the Good News of Jesus Christ and wanted the same for their kids. The disciples’ disapproval must have really shocked them, but surely not Christ’s defense, nor his acceptance. They brought their little children to Jesus expecting the love and grace of God that they had heard about or seen, and despite those who tried to stop them, they got it.
How beautiful it is that they brought their children to Jesus! I imagine that there were many mothers present that day, holding the hands of their babies.
With all due respect, here’s to all you Mothers who have received and believed the Good News of Jesus Christ, and have passed it on from one generation to the next. You are all priceless blessings to the entire world.
Happy Mother’s Day to mothers everywhere, and especially to my own.
